Efteling’s SafeStrap brings a breakthrough in ride accessibility

Read time: 2 minutes

Efteling will introduce SafeStrap from 1 October 2026, allowing guests with leg prostheses to keep them securely attached on selected rides. The rollout covers Baron 1898, the swing rides and Hooghmoed, followed by Ravenring in December.

The project began with coaster enthusiast Veerle’s wish to ride Baron 1898 wearing her prosthesis. TU Delft graduate India Hoekman developed the solution with prosthesis users, Efteling and rehabilitation specialists. Development included practical trials and a safety assessment.

For rides where legs hang freely, removing a prosthesis can be a condition of boarding because of the risk of it coming loose. SafeStrap addresses that specific barrier, making the experience more straightforward for affected guests.

The product is available worldwide through manufacturer Edge Safety, but each park must obtain approval for individual attractions in consultation with its regulator. Wider adoption therefore depends on parks taking that next step; availability alone does not mean guests can use it on every ride.

The TT Take

For the guests this helps, keeping a prosthesis on and sharing the ride with friends could make a huge difference to their day. Efteling and its partners deserve credit for developing a solution with the people who will actually use it. Alongside the UK accessibility debate we’ve been covering around Merlin’s Ride Access Pass, it is encouraging to celebrate practical progress on a different barrier to enjoying the parks. Efteling is setting an example worth following, and we’d love to see more operators take it up.
